Paver Patios and Walkways Across Fort Worth & DFW

Pavers are the workhorse of premium outdoor living. Patios, walkways, driveways, fire-pit surrounds — they handle the heavy aesthetic load. The catch is that pavers are only as good as the base under them. We build paver projects with the same engineered base philosophy we use for turf.

02 · Pavers buyer guide

The pattern is visible; the assembly carries the load

Pavers can create patios, walkways, landings, grill zones, fire-feature surrounds, and structured transitions through a turf yard. The visible decisions include unit size, color, texture, bond pattern, borders, cuts, and joint width. Below the surface, excavation, base material, compaction, bedding, edge restraint, grade, drainage, and intended loading determine how the installation behaves. A written proposal should explain both layers instead of pricing only the square footage of the selected paver.

Material choice should fit the architecture and use. Concrete pavers, brick, and natural stone differ in thickness, variation, edge character, maintenance, and installation method. Samples should be reviewed in outdoor light when possible, because color can read differently beside a home, pool deck, fence, or existing concrete. Availability and manufacturer tolerances should also be confirmed before final layout decisions.

Base, edges, and drainage deserve line items

Paver movement can relate to subgrade, compaction, base depth, edge restraint, water, loads, roots, or adjacent construction. No responsible contractor should promise that ground movement can never occur. The practical goal is an assembly appropriate to the site and intended use, with stable edges and a finished grade that does not trap water against the home or redirect it carelessly onto neighboring property.

Ask how demolition and disposal are handled, what base material and depth are proposed, how it will be compacted, what supports the perimeter, and where surface water will go. Vehicle areas require different planning than a garden path. Pool and patio work may also involve existing deck elevations, drains, doors, steps, equipment access, and slip-resistance considerations.

Coordinate pavers and turf before either surface is installed

Turf joints between large-format pavers can create a clean modern grid, while stepping patterns and border bands can organize movement through a larger lawn. These combinations work best when stone thickness, spacing, base elevations, turf pile, seam plan, drainage, and edge restraint are resolved together. Retrofitting one material around a finished surface can be possible, but it may add cuts, transitions, or limitations that early coordination would avoid.

The layout should also reflect furniture, grills, gates, drainage paths, mowing transitions at any remaining natural lawn, and how people actually cross the yard. A drawing or field layout helps the homeowner see repeated joint widths, partial cuts, and border decisions before permanent work begins.

Compare scope and long-term care, not only material price

Two paver proposals can use the same product while including different demolition, base, edge, drainage, cut, joint, cleanup, and restoration assumptions. Ask for those items in writing along with exclusions and change-order rules. If sealing is proposed, clarify the product, appearance, timing, maintenance, and whether it is part of the original price. If polymeric joint sand is proposed, ask how the installation and activation follow the material instructions.

Routine care depends on the material and setting. Debris removal, stain response, joint maintenance, drainage checks, and occasional cleaning may be appropriate. Manufacturer instructions and the project handoff should control rather than a universal maintenance schedule. Emerald Green Turf reviews these choices during a free onsite quote and can coordinate adjacent artificial turf where the design calls for both systems.

Resolve permits, utilities, and site logistics before the start date

A patio or walkway may look self-contained, yet the work can interact with easements, utilities, irrigation, doors, steps, pool equipment, property lines, and runoff rules. The property owner should verify current city and association requirements for the complete scope. The contractor should identify what information it provides, what approvals remain the owner's responsibility, and what conditions would require a specialist or revised plan.

Material staging and access also affect the project. Confirm where pallets, aggregate, removed material, and equipment can move without blocking required access or damaging surfaces that must remain. Protecting fences, driveways, planting, and irrigation should be discussed before work. A clear logistics plan gives the homeowner a better basis for comparing proposals and reduces surprises once excavation begins.

See all FAQs →
What affects the cost of a paver project in DFW?+

Material, demolition, access, base depth, edge conditions, pattern complexity, cuts, drainage details, and restoration all influence a paver quote. We provide a written project-specific scope after selecting materials and walking the site.

Can pavers shift over time?+

Pavers can move if the base, compaction, edges, drainage, loads, or surrounding soil are not handled correctly. A responsible installation uses an assembly appropriate to the site, but no contractor should claim that ground movement can never occur.

Can you connect pavers with artificial turf?+

Yes. Pavers and artificial turf can be combined in paths, grid patios, landings, and outdoor-living layouts. Elevation, stone spacing, turf pile, edges, drainage, and traffic should be coordinated before either surface is installed.
